About this play
Decision speed on the catch with a dribble limit, and a competitive closeout in the same rep, which is why this is my 1v1 drill for players who hold the ball too long. Pairs, one ball, the line of pairs waiting at the top. The defender starts inside with the ball and rolls it out to the offense at the wing, then closes out, because the roll makes a live catch and a real closeout instead of a staged one. The offense catches in triple threat, rips through, and attacks the closeout's lead foot at once with a live dribble, three dribbles at most, one for the strong players. Shot or layup, the defender boxes out, and there are no second shots. Scoring: a point for a make, a point for an offensive rebound, a point for a defensive foul. Play to five, then switch roles and go to the other wing. Mistakes: more than three dribbles, backing down slowly, catching flat-footed, the defender flying past on the closeout. Progression: the coach passes from the top instead of the roll-out, then a help defender for 2v2. Youth and up. I borrowed it from Basketball Immersion's roll out on the wing drill and Coach's Clipboard's 1-on-1 drill; give them a look for the scoring variations.
