About this play

A shooting game against an imaginary pro: a make is one point for the shooter and a miss is two for the pro, first to twenty-one. Why it works: the consequence for a miss is the whole drill. A shooter alone in a gym will rush bad shots for an hour; put a score on the board where every miss hurts twice and he takes only game shots, sprints to every spot, and gets his feet set before the catch. Setup: one shooter, one passer and rebounder under the rim (or a self toss), one ball, and five cones marking the right corner, right wing, top, left wing, and left corner. Shoot across the arc, reverse at the end, and keep going until one side hits the target. Round two changes the shot: one-dribble pull-ups, then threes, then free throws, each as its own game. Mistakes: rushing after a miss, loosening the pro's value until it stops being a challenge, and standing still between shots. Progression: the pro scores three on a missed three, or try the 37 Point Thriller scored version. It suits every level, because the shooter picks his own target. I picked this one up from PGC Basketball's Beat the Pro video and post and Coach Herve Vincent's rules on Basketball Manitoba; give them a look for the scoring variations.
