About this play
The toughness drill: a coach shoots, the defense hits and rebounds, the offense crashes, and whoever gets it plays live until the defense owns the ball. Why it works: the box-out happens under real chaos with a score attached, so players learn that a rebound is a fight they start before the ball comes off the rim. Setup: five defenders in the paint (blocks, elbows, free-throw line) and five on offense spread around the arc, coach shooting from twelve to seventeen feet. The drawing uses three pairs plus the coach so the hits read; run it five on five. Scoring: a basket is one, a defensive rebound one, an offensive rebound two, a steal one, a turnover or foul minus one. Ten minutes, five each side, losers run. Common mistakes: turning to watch the shot before contact, boxing out air, and tempers; a push is a foul and a reset. Progression: three on three using only the blocks and the free-throw line, or Thad Matta's lid on the rim so every shot misses. High school and up. I picked this up from Coach's Clipboard's War drill page and Chris Mack's War Rebounding clinic on Championship Productions; give them a look for the full scoring sheet.
