Drill: Three-Man Weave (Half Court)

About this play

The weave from half court, three passes to a layup: the middle player passes to a wing and sprints behind him, that wing passes across to the other wing and runs behind him, and the third pass is a bounce pass to the cutter for a layup, with the passer rebounding out of the net. Why it works: it is passing and catching at a run with no dribble, and every pass has to be thrown ahead of a moving teammate while the passer is already running behind, so timing and talking are built in. Setup: three per group, three lines at half court, middle and two wide, one or two balls; the next group goes when the group ahead reaches the free throw line. Score it as makes in two minutes with a deduction for a fumble or a miss. Common mistakes: dribbling, cutting in front instead of behind, floating the pass behind the runner, jogging. Progression: the full-court weave with five passes, then three-point shots for the two non-shooters, then the five-man weave into three-on-two and two-on-one. Every level, as a warmup rather than a core drill. I learned the weave the way everyone did and sharpened it with Coach's Clipboard's weave passing drills and the IMG Academy warmup video; give them a look for the full-court counts.
