About this play
Coach's Clipboard's team free throw competition: at the end of practice, when everyone is tired, the team splits between two baskets with the score set tied, and each player shoots a one-and-one; every make is a point, and the first team to sixty wins. Why it works: free throws in a game are shot tired and with a consequence, and shooting them fresh and casual between drills teaches a different shot. The fatigue is the point. Setup: half the team at each basket, one ball per basket, the shooter at the line, two rebounders at the blocks, and the waiting line along the lane line, never standing at midcourt. Start 52-52 with four per team or 48-48 with twelve, so the game ends near sixty. Make the first to earn the second, full routine on both. Losers run; a loser who made all his free throws is excused. Mistakes: skipping the routine when tired, rebounders distracting the shooter, and a casual first shot because the second is coming. Progressions: Swish, where only a clean make counts; Plus Two Minus Two with push-ups; Matthew Driscoll's Win the Game. Every level, team goal eighty percent. I got this one from Coach's Clipboard's free throw drills page and Basketball For Coaches' five free throw drills, and Driscoll's Championship Productions clip shows the pressure version; give them a look.
