About this play
One player, one ball, and the pursuit footwork rebounding demands. Why it works: throwing the ball high off the glass at an angle makes the player chase it across the lane, jump at the right moment, and catch at the top with two hands, over and over, with nobody else needed. Setup: a player on the low block with the ball facing the backboard, the rest of the line waiting behind him. He throws it high off the glass so it carries to the other side of the paint, sprints across, catches at the highest point, lands outside the lane, chins it with elbows out, and throws it right back. On the fifth catch he explodes up and finishes. Three sets of five, or thirty seconds continuous. Common mistakes: landing inside the lane, catching with one hand, and letting the ball drop below the chin. Progression: a coach throws the ball off the glass to vary the timing, or a partner holds a pad on the far block for contact on the catch. Suits every level. I learned the Superman from the Arizona rebounding drills on The Coaching Toolbox and IMG Academy's big man series; look them up for the pad version.
