About this play
The two-minute handle warmup: pound dribbles, kills, the figure 8, the spider, and the crossover, each for thirty to sixty seconds with a ball in every hand on the floor. Why it works: hand strength and ball control without looking are the foundation under every change-of-direction move, and daily repetition is what builds them, so I run this at the start of practice before anything else. Setup: a leader at the half-court circle, the team in a ring around him six feet apart, in a stance. The two cones here mark one player's feet so the figure 8 path reads on the court. Common mistakes: looking at the ball, standing tall instead of sitting the hips, slapping instead of pounding, and cheating the height on kills. Progression: two balls, or the leader calls switch at random so players react instead of counting. Suits every level, youth first. I learned this series from Coach's Clipboard's dribbling drills and Breakthrough Basketball's stationary dribbling video; give them a look for the full seventeen variations.
