Drill: Star Passing
- Court
- Half court
- Length
- 8 steps
About this play
Five lines at the points of a star, top, two wings, two baseline spots, one ball, and a pass that goes across the star every time: top to left wing, left wing across to right baseline, right baseline to right wing, right wing across to left baseline, left baseline to the top. The passer follows his pass and joins the back of the line he threw to. Why it works: the receiver always has to step to a ball coming from across the floor, so the drill teaches passing and catching on the move, awareness of who is next, and pace, without a defender slowing it down. Setup: ten or more players in five lines of two, half court, one ball to start and a second added later. Two or three minutes, counting consecutive clean catches. Common mistakes: the passer standing after the pass, receivers waiting flat-footed, passes across the star arriving late. Progression: bounce passes only, then reverse the pattern, then a second ball two spots ahead, then a layup off the last pass. Youth and every level as a warmup. The order here is Coach's Clipboard's, from their full-court passing drills page, and the Jr. NBA's star passing video shows it with kids; give them a look.
