Drill: Slip the Screen vs a Hedge
- Court
- Half court
- Length
- 6 steps
About this play
The counter that punishes a hedge or a switch, and it teaches screeners to read their own defender, which is why it is mixed into every ball-screen breakdown I run. Guards at both wings, posts at both blocks, two balls, and a coach playing the screener's defender who shows. 5 passes to 1 at the wing and sprints to set the ball screen exactly like a real screen, because a lazy sprint tells the defense it is a slip. 1 attacks as if to use it with one hard dribble toward the screen. The instant the coach jumps out to show, and before any contact, 5 opens his hips and cuts straight to the rim. 1 throws the bounce or pocket pass and 5 finishes. Alternate slip reps with real roll reps so the slip stays unpredictable; one minute per side, ten makes per group. Mistakes: slipping after contact (that is a roll), the handler's eyes on the rim instead of the slipper, slipping when nobody showed. Progression: 2v2 with the screener's defender hedging or switching, then the Go concept where the screener slips the moment the handler passes to a wing. High school and up. This came from Coach's Clipboard's fake pick-and-roll drill and Baylor's setting and slipping ball screens clip on Shoot-A-Way; read them if you want the 2v2 version.
