About this play

The second screen is what makes flex, Horns, and every screen-the-screener set work, and the timing of it is the hard part, which is why I break it out of the continuity and drill it alone. Three players and a passer: 2 with the ball at the right wing, 5 on the right block, 3 in the left short corner, 1 at the left slot. 5 steps across to set the flex screen on the lane line with his feet set. 3 reads his defender and cuts off it to the ball-side block, and 2 looks inside first every time. As 3 clears, 1 sprints down to screen the screener, and 5 curls off that screen to the elbow with his eyes on the ball. 2 passes, 5 shoots the elbow jumper, and 1 fills the corner after screening, because the man who sets the second screen clears to the corner every time, so the next side of the continuity starts with its spacing already in place. If the elbow is denied, 5 steps out to the slot and the action runs to the other side. One minute per side, then rotate 1 to 5 to 3 to 2. Mistakes: 1 screening before 3 clears, 5 leaving before contact, 2 skipping the inside look, 5 fading instead of coming to the elbow. Progression: full flex continuity, then live 4v4. High school. This came from Breakthrough Basketball's flex screen-the-screener shooting drill and Coach's Clipboard's flex offense page; start there for the full continuity.
