About this play

The most common two-man action in the game, which is why I break it in two: the 2v0 teaches the footwork and the 2v2 teaches the two reads that decide everything. Lines of guards at both wings and posts at both blocks, two balls; two defenders wait at the sideline for the 2v2. 5 passes to 1 at the wing and follows his pass to set the ball screen on the top shoulder, feet set, wide, arms in. 1 sets his man up away, then dribbles tight off 5's hip toward the middle, shoulder to hip. 5 rolls in a straight line after contact with the ball-side hand up, and 1 delivers the pocket pass. One minute per option per side, then add the short roll, the pick-and-pop, and the pull-up. In the 2v2 the on-ball defender goes over or under: over means turn the corner or pull up at the elbow; under means stop and shoot behind the screen. Games to two or three, make it take it. Mistakes: the screener moving on contact, the handler going wide of the screen, the roller leaving before contact, the handler never looking at the roll. Progression: 3v3 with a weak-side shooter. High school and up. I learned the breakdown from Coach's Clipboard's pick-and-roll drills and Jamie Dixon's pick-and-roll work for bigs on Championship Productions; look them up for the short-roll series.
