About this play
The first two seconds of transition: a coach shoots from the free throw line, the two rebounders on the blocks call shot and box out the offensive rebounders behind them, the ball comes off, the rebounder chins it, pivots to the sideline without a dribble, and throws a two-hand overhead outlet to the wing, who has called outlet and is already moving up the sideline. The opposite wing sprints the far lane and the two attack before the help gets back. Why: secure, pivot, see, throw is a habit, and the break only runs if it happens the same way every time off every miss. Setup: a coach with a ball at the free throw line, two rebounders on the blocks, two offensive rebounders behind them (dummies here), two outlets at the wings; six to eight minutes, and a turnover costs sprints. Common mistakes: the rebounder dribbling before the outlet, the outlet standing still at the wing, no ball and shot calls, releasing the box-out early. Progression: outlet to the point guard against a defender, then five on five off the miss. High school and up. This one comes from Coach's Clipboard's rebound-outlet-break and transition drills and Teach Hoops' rebounding and outlet video; start there for the full version with shooters and a defender.
