Drill: Pressure Jump Shots
- Court
- Half court
- Length
- 8 steps
About this play
Four lines at one basket, one at each elbow and one at each wing, a ball at the front of every line, and on go the first player in each line shoots. Make it and you jog to the next line clockwise; miss it and you go to the back of the line you are in. First player to eight makes, two from each spot, wins. Why it works: the shots are open, but the pressure is real. Everyone can see who is moving and who is stuck, and a miss costs a player his place in the race, so he learns to shoot a plain jump shot with something riding on it. It also keeps a whole team active at one basket. Setup: four lines of two or three, four balls, no cones; the shooter rebounds his own shot and passes it back to the next player in the line he just left before he moves. Three to five minutes. Mistakes: rushing the next shot after a miss, players cutting lines, and sloppy return passes that stall a whole line. Progression: swishes only for older players, and the distance moves from the blocks for the youngest to the arc for varsity. Every level. I got this one from Basketball For Coaches' twenty shooting drills post; give it a look for the rest of the list.
