Drill: Post Seal and Catch vs a Defender
- Court
- Half court
- Length
- 8 steps
About this play
Post scoring is decided before the catch, and this isolates the position battle, which is why I use it more than any finishing drill. Two posts, two coaches as passers at the wings, one ball. 1 is the offense, X1 the defense, and 1 starts on the ball-side block with X1 on the opposite block. 1 steps across, puts his lead leg between the defender's feet, sits into him low and wide, and shows the baseline-side target hand. The coaches pass the ball wing to wing five times, and on every reversal 1 has to spin and re-seal on the new ball side without ever releasing contact. After the fifth pass the coach feeds him; he catches on two feet, chins the ball, and finishes with a drop step or a power move. Five reversals a rep, four to six reps each, then switch roles. Mistakes: standing up out of the seal, arm-barring instead of using the legs, releasing early to catch, catching off one foot. Progression: a live defender, then a second defender with a pad on the baseline for the 1v2 seal and finish. High school and up. This one comes from Coaching Toolbox's post skill development drills and Matt Hackenberg's seal and pivot breakdown; look them up if you want the Xavier continuous sealing version.
