About this play
Rick Pitino's partner shooting race: pairs with one ball, five spots across the arc, and at every spot each partner takes three shots in a row, a drive and finish at the rim, a one or two dribble pull-up, and a three. Six shots a spot, thirty in all, each make one point. Partner A shoots while B rebounds and outlets from under the rim, then they switch, then both move to the next spot. The first pair to finish ends the round for everyone, and the pair with the most makes wins. Why it works: finishing, shooting off the dribble, and catch-and-shoot at every spot on the floor, under a race clock, with pairs so everyone is shooting or passing the whole time. Setup: one pair per basket or two pairs at opposite elbows, one ball a pair, cones at the right corner, right wing, top, left wing, and left corner. Under three minutes a round. Mistakes: sprinting through the reps until form collapses, a rebounder slow to outlet, and lazy finishes where the layup should be. Progressions: score the three as three points, add a shot fake before the pull-up, losers run. High school level. I got this one from Coach Bob's Pitino Drill video, and the partner rotation is the same as Coach's Clipboard's partner shooting; give them a look.
