About this play
The first offensive concept a youth team should own, which is why it is the first thing I teach after footwork: pass, then cut to the basket, and expect the ball back. Three players, one ball, lines behind each spot: 1 at the top with the ball, 2 at the right wing, 3 at the left wing. 2 V-cuts, a step toward the block and back out, to get open before the pass. 1 passes to 2 and takes one step toward 3 as if to screen away, so a defender relaxes, then plants at the elbow and cuts hard down the lane with his hands up. 2 throws the bounce pass to the cutter's lead hand for the layup. If the cutter is not open on the coach's call, 3 replaces at the top, 2 passes back, and 1 fills the open wing so the drill keeps going. Two minutes per side, then rotate 1 to 2 to 3. Game form: 3v3 point per pass, where every pass followed by a basket cut scores a point and baskets count normally. Mistakes: passing and standing, cutting before the receiver has the ball, flat passes to a cutter, cutting away from the ball. Progression: guided defense that allows the first pass, then the 3v3 game. Youth. This came from Bill Thom and Jim Datka's three-man give-and-go on CoachTube and Coaching Toolbox's point per pass drill; start there for the 3v3 scoring rules.
