About this play

The elbow catch is where high-low, pinch-post, and Horns offenses begin, and the pivot and face-up have to be automatic there, which is why I run this before any of those sets get taught. One post working, a coach passing from the ball-side wing, a line of posts on the weak-side block, one or two balls. The first post flashes across the lane to the ball-side elbow with his hands up, running to the catch, and lands on a two-foot jump stop so either foot can pivot. He front pivots on the inside foot to face the rim with the ball at his chin, eyes to the rim at once. Read A is pinch and go: one hard dribble to the rim and finish. Read B is a jab step into the elbow jumper; read C is the step-hop, a short drop step to the lane with one power dribble and a two-foot landing. Rebound, pass back to the coach, end of the line, switch sides every round. Two minutes a read or eight makes. Mistakes: catching on one foot, facing up slowly, dribbling before looking, drifting on the jumper. Progression: a low post for the high-low pass, then a defender who shows a read. All levels. I learned it from Coach's Clipboard's flash to high post drill and Teach Hoops' split post footwork video; give them a look for the step-hop.
