Drill: Four-Corner Pass and Pivot

About this play

Four lines in a square around the key, two at the baseline corners and two at the sideline extended from the top of the arc, a ball at the front of each. All four dribble right-handed toward the center of the key, jump stop about three feet apart, front pivot on the right foot, and chest pass counter-clockwise to the front of the next line, calling the receiver's name, then sprint to the back of the line they passed to. Why: the jump stop, the pivot, and a pass thrown out of the pivot are the footwork under every catch in a half-court offense, and four balls at once force the timing and the talking. Setup: eight or more players, four balls. Twenty passes, then the coach calls switch: left hand, left-foot pivot, clockwise passes. Start at half speed and build to full. Common mistakes: one line late and the timing turning to chaos, traveling on the pivot, soft passes, walking back to the line. Progression: reverse pivot, bounce passes, the swing version where the receiver jogs toward the next line and catches on the move. Youth and every level. I borrowed this from Breakthrough Basketball's four-corner pass and pivot drill and Coach's Clipboard's four-corners footwork drill; read them for the swing variation.
