About this play
The post breakdown I run first every season, because it gives a post player a baseline move, a middle counter, and a step-through counter from the same two-foot stop, and that is why the footwork sticks: nothing new is learned for the counter, only the read. Three players and two balls. One ball rests a step above each block; 1 works while 2 and 3 rebound and re-place the balls. 1 sprints from under the rim to a block, jump-stops over the ball, picks it up at his chin, sells the middle with a head-and-shoulder fake, then drop steps baseline with one power dribble and finishes off two feet off the glass. He sprints back under the rim and repeats to the other block. Round two is the fake baseline and the inside drop to a jump hook, round three the up-and-under, round four the turn and shoot. One to two minutes per move, then the three rotate. Mistakes: a short drop step that seals nobody, lifting the pivot foot before the step-through, finishing off one foot in traffic, and skipping the fake. Progression: a defender who allows the move but contests the shot, then a pad, then live. High school core, usable at every level. I learned the block series from Coach's Clipboard's post breakdown page and Championship Productions' centers workout; give them a look for the full eight-move version.
