Drill: Dribble Moves at the Cone into a Layup

About this play

The game sequence rehearsed: approach the defender at speed, make the move at his reach, accelerate past him, and finish. Why: cone courses teach moves but not timing, so this drill puts a token defender at the top of the arc and asks for the called move exactly there, then a finish with the hand that matches the side. Setup: two lines, one on each sideline at half court, a ball each, a coach, chair, or cone at each arc as the token defender, and two cones along each sideline for the trip back. The shooter rebounds his own shot, dribbles to the opposite corner, makes a move at each sideline cone, and joins the other line; after a few minutes the lines flip so the left hand gets the same work. Several laps per move, three or four moves, eight to ten minutes. Common mistakes: telegraphing the move, no change of pace after it, a wrong-hand finish, cutting the sideline cones short. Progression: a coach in the paint with a pad for contact finishes, pull-ups at one end and layups at the other. Every level. I got this one from Coach's Clipboard's dribbling moves drill and Teach Hoops' cone dribbling into layups video; give them a look.
