About this play
The box-out pivot and the hold, isolated from everything else. Why it works: there is no shot to watch and no rebound to chase, so the only thing a defender can do to win is pivot into his man, sit his backside into the thighs, widen his arms, and hold with his legs for a five count. Setup: pairs around the free-throw circle, defenders on the line facing out and partners a step outside facing them, one ball set in the middle by the coach. The drawing shows three pairs so the pivots read clearly; run it with five. On the whistle the offense attacks the ball; a touch before the count is a point for the offense, and any grab or hold is a point for the offense too. Losers run. Common mistakes: reaching instead of pivoting, standing upright, and chasing the ball before making contact. Progression: the coach shoots instead of placing the ball so the rebound is live, or shrink to two pairs for more room. Suits every level; youth teams add a no-diving rule. I learned this one from Coach's Clipboard's rebounding box-out drills page and Redbird Basketball's circle box out video; give them a look for the scoring twists.
