Drill: Arc Finishing
- Court
- Half court
- Length
- 9 steps
About this play
Five cones just outside the three-point line, right corner, right wing, top, left wing, left corner, and a player who starts under the rim with the ball, dribbles out around the outside of each cone in turn, turns the corner, and attacks for a layup. Five right-handed finishes, then five back the other way with the left hand. Why it works: a game never hands a player the same finish twice, and five cones around the arc give him five different attack angles with both hands in one round, with the corner cut around the cone standing in for the moment a driver gets his shoulder past a defender. Setup: one player, one ball, five cones; a line of three or four waits behind the first cone. Ten layups a round, timed. Common mistakes: coasting around the cone, dropping the eyes, finishing with the wrong hand, rounding the attack angle. Progression: a dribble move at the cone, or vary the finish, Euro step, runner, reverse. Every level. The arc finishing drill comes from Breakthrough Basketball, both the page and the video; start there for the finish variations.
