About this play

Lane discipline and the secondary-break spots, installed before a single defender gets added. Why it works: five players with no defense have no excuse for a wrong lane, so the coach can hold every player to his spot and his timing until the break is automatic, then add bodies. Setup: five players, one ball. 3 takes the ball out of the net and inbounds to 1, who dribbles the middle lane slightly right of center; 2 sprints the right sideline to the right corner, 4 sprints the left sideline to the left slot, 5 rim-runs to the opposite low block, and 3 trails to the left wing. Five trips per group, one option per trip: the seam drive, the corner pass drawn here, the 4-cut across the lane with the pass to 3 for the three, the 4 read at the top, and the long pitch to 5. Rebound every miss and score, then go back the other way. Common mistakes: wings drifting inside early, 1 passing to 4 from half court, and 5 not touching the block. Progression: Down and Back, where the point guard calls a different option every trip. High school. I learned the five trips from Coach's Clipboard's 5-on-0 page and the Championship Productions transition drill embedded there; read them for the other four options.
