About this play

Game-speed conversion both ways, with a winner. Why it works: every change of possession is live, the rebounder has to find the sideline outlet instead of dribbling out of traffic, the far wing has to beat the ball down the floor, and the three who just shot have to sprint back and find a man, so the decisions in transition get made under real pressure instead of in a line. Setup: two teams of five or more, one ball. Three on offense against three on defense in the half court; each team's extra players stand at the free-throw line extended on their own defensive end along the sidelines. Play live with a short clock, seven to ten seconds. On the stop or score, the defensive rebounder outlets to the near sideline player stepping in, the far sideline player sprints to be ahead of the ball, the outlet takes one or two dribbles to the middle and pitches ahead, and the three former attackers sprint back. The two teammates who did not touch the ball rotate out to the sideline spots. First team to twelve or fifteen, twos and threes count. Common mistakes: no safety back when the shot goes up, wings not beating their man down the floor, and cross-lane passes into the dropping defender. Progression: a fourth player enters from the baseline as a trailer. High school. I got this from Coach Dribble Drive's 3-on-3 transition drill and Redbird Basketball's 3-on-3 continuous video; give them a look for the scoring and the rotation.
