About this play
A team needs at least two ball screen coverages so the offense cannot predict the read, and drop is the one I install first, which is why it is the one drawn here. Setup: 2v2, one ball, the guard at the top and the big at the block, their two defenders matched up. The big sprints up and screens; his defender calls drop early and backs to the free throw line, keeping the ball out of the paint and protecting the roll. The guard's defender makes the handler use the screen, no reject, and goes over the top getting skinny. The big's defender contains the drive until the guard's defender is back in front, then recovers to the roller with high hands. Three reps per coverage, every player plays guard and big, then live 2v2 and 5v5. Common mistakes: letting the reject, the big never recovering to the roller, and the drop so deep the pull-up is free. Progression: add ice on side screens and switch, then Ryan Schultz's continuous version with four offense and a coach passing. High school. It comes from Breakthrough Basketball's ice, drop, and switch article (LoGalbo) and Schultz's ball screen defense drill video; read them for the other coverages.
