About this play
Two minutes, twenty-two made layups, left hand only: half the team at each baseline to the right of the lane, the first two players at each end with a ball, and on go the first player speed-dribbles left-handed up the far side, angles in at the free throw line extended, lays it in left-handed, rebounds his own shot, dribbles back up the opposite side, finishes a second left-hand layup, and joins that line. The next player leaves when the one ahead reaches half court. Why: the weak-hand speed dribble and the weak-hand finish only get good under fatigue and a clock, and a team goal makes everyone own the count. Setup: four balls, lanes kept so the two lines never collide; the cones mark optional move points at each free throw line extended for the dribble-move variation. Coach's Clipboard's varsity boys need seventy-five makes in three minutes. Common mistakes: the right hand sneaking in, slowing on the approach, two lines colliding, not chasing the miss. Progression: a prescribed move at each cone, or a coach in the paint with a pad. High school and up. I learned the drill from Championship Productions' 22 in 2 video and Coach's Clipboard's full-court dribbling drills; look them up for the counts by level.
