About this play
The staple conditioner that keeps a whole roster moving through constant 3-on-2 reads and outlet passes. Why it works: nobody stands in a line; every rebound becomes an outlet and a break the other way, and the four players who did not get the ball have to communicate their next job in a second. Setup: eleven players and one ball. Three on offense at half court, two defenders at each basket, and two outlet players standing out of bounds at each free-throw line extended. The three attack 3-on-2 for one shot, everyone rebounds, the rebounder outlets to the sideline player stepping in, and those three attack the two defenders at the other end. The four non-rebounders yell defense; the first two become the next defenders at that basket, the other two fill the outlet spots. Defensive rules: the top man stops the ball, the low man takes the first pass. Four to five minutes continuous, counting made layups. Common mistakes: outlets stepping in late, the rebounder dribbling, and the two new defenders not calling the stack. Progression: the 7-man half-court version. Suits every level. I learned it from Coach's Clipboard's 11-man drill page and Bob Knight's version on Championship Productions; give them a look for the rotation rules.
