Drill: 1-on-1 Box Out vs a Shot

About this play
The simplest game-realistic rebounding rep: closeout, shot, contact, pursue, outlet. Why it works: the shot is live and the shooter wants his miss back, so the defender has to do the whole sequence under real pressure, and the outlet to the next shooter makes him finish the play instead of celebrating the board. Setup: a shooting line on the wing, a defender line at the free-throw line, one ball. The defender closes out, contests without fouling, finds the shooter's body with a forearm as he turns, rides him on a curve away from the rim instead of letting him cut straight to the ball, then goes and gets it. Scoring: offense gets the rebound, the defender does five push-ups; a soft or late outlet to the next shooter costs the rebounder five more. Common mistakes: watching the flight of the ball, boxing out too close to the rim on a perimeter shooter, and holding. Progression: two on two and three on three with the coach shooting, or slide the shooter toward half court so the defender boxes from the elbow. Suits every level. I got this one from Coach's Clipboard's box-out-the-shooter drill and Chris Mack's 1-on-1 rebounding clinic on Championship Productions; give them a look for the 2v2 and 3v3 progressions.
