About this play
The corner shooter's play. Why the corner stays put once the ball is below the free throw line: his defender has to choose between helping on the drive and staying with a shooter whose feet are set at the NBA three-point line, and either choice is a layup or a three. 2 catches to shoot, never to dribble around; if he can't shoot, the catch is on the move. Counter shown: the scouted defense runs 2 off the line with a hard closeout, so 2 swings it and 1 attacks again from the wing; this time X2 face-guards the corner to deny the kick, so 2 back cuts along the baseline while 5 T's up to clear it, and the bounce pass is a layup. The corner's three rules: hugged, be patient; played flat, kick up; played on the high side or denied, back cut. The corner's three rules come from the Walberg DVD notes on hoopsplaybook.ca and Coach's Clipboard's wing penetration drill, and Coach Tony Miller's four shooting drills are how I'd teach the catch; look them up.
