Dribble Drive: Drop and Seal, the Post Dump-Off

About this play

The post's job in the dribble drive, drawn as a whole possession. Why the post never posts up: he stays on the block opposite the ball, out of touching distance of his defender, so the lane stays empty; when the driver gets past the drop zone and X5 steps across to help, 5 relocates under and seals X5 on his back for the dump, caught high and finished with the outside hand. The help defender has to give up a layup to one of them. Counter shown: the scouted defense covers down on the post with the weak-side wing, so 5 kicks the ball out to 3 at the open window; 3 attacks the middle gap at once, the second attack in attack-attack-skip-attack-attack; this time X5 stays home hugging 5, which leaves the lane to the rack wide open, and 5 stays wide for the rebound because every miss is his. Passes to the post: lob, wrap, or bounce, never below the head; 5 forward pivots on the inside foot so his defender can't get inside. The post rules came from Coach's Clipboard's dribble-drive motion page, and Michael Lynch's breakdown of the drop pass to the five is what made the seal click for me; give both a look.
