About this play
A quick hitter from Calipari's Memphis playbook, the write-up titled Dribble Drive Motion 5. Why it works: after a few possessions the defense keys on the drive and sits in the gaps, so the offense uses the drive to set up a cut. When the point guard is stopped in the breakdown zone, the corner lifts to the wing to take the pass, the point guard loops behind him into the empty corner, and the new ball handler drives middle off the catch while the trailer slides to the top and the post crosses the lane to the far block. Counter shown: with the defense keyed on the ball and the drive stopped in the drop zone, the ball goes to the trailer at the top, swings to 1 at the wing, and 1 passes back up top and basket cuts for the give-and-go lob, because a defender who has been jumping to the ball all possession jumps one more time. Rule: the post clears to the weak block before the lob so the rim is empty. I learned this one from the Dribble Drive Motion 5 write-up at Coaching Better Basketball, and Half Court Hoops' Kentucky Chest clip shows Calipari's teams running the same give-and-go; read them for the rest of the Memphis sets.
