About this play
For ages 12 and up, after the man-to-man series. The corner is where the 2-3 has a choice, and this play shows both. First the standard coverage: the forward takes the corner, X5 fronts the block, the weak forward slides to the rim, the guards sink, and the zone concedes the long pass back out. Then, after the offense reverses and comes back, the coach calls the trap: forward and guard on the ball with their feet together, X5 fronting, X3 at the rim, X2 at the elbow reading the lob. Why the corner is the trap spot: the sideline and baseline are a third and fourth defender, the only passes out are long, and the lob to the wing is the one X2 is waiting for. Where the advantage lies: contain costs nothing and forces a long pass; the trap risks a lob to the rim but can end the possession outright. Call it by situation, not habit: trap a weak ball handler, trap late in the clock, contain a team that passes well. Common youth mistakes: trapping late and fouling, splitting the trap, and the weak forward staying wide so the lob to the rim is open. I picked up the corner trap from Al Marshall's trapping session for Championship Productions, and Coach's Clipboard's 2-3 zone page walks through trapping the corner; look them up for the full read.
