About this play
The man-press break against the run and jump: clear out, keep the ball in the middle, and split the jump with a pass. Why it works: when a second defender runs at the dribbler, his own man is standing alone until the first defender gets there, and a dribbler who still has the ball and sees it early hits that man in stride every time. 4 inbounds to 1, who jab-steps and dribbles the middle, never the sideline; 2, 3 and 5 clear deep and take their defenders with them; 4 curls behind the ball as the trailer, and 1 waits for him before advancing. When the jumper comes, 1 does not pick the ball up; he retreat-dribbles with his shoulders turned so the ball is behind him and his chin on his shoulder, and passes to the man the jumper left. The read: a defender other than the on-ball defender runs at the dribbler. Counter shown: the press rotates well and tries to trap on the sideline; the reversal goes back to the trailer, which creates four on three ahead of the ball, and the first pass past the ball is a layup. Rules: no spin dribbles with your back to the floor; don't take quick, long shots; attack the numbers. I got this from Hoop Coach's piece on handling the box double, the man double, and the run and jump, and Get Better Every Day's film on attacking it; look them up if you want the dribbler's footwork.
