About this play
The 1-2-2 attack against the diamond press. Why the 1-2-2: once the diamond commits two players to the corner, the floor it cannot cover is the sideline near half court and everything behind the trappers, so 2 and 4 sit at half court on the sidelines, 5 goes long, and 1 is the only receiver up. 3 takes the ball out of the net and throws it in before the diamond is set, and 3 is the inbounder on every make so nobody has to think about who it is. 1 v-cuts to the corner, catches facing up court, looks middle then sideline, and never dribbles into the corner; when two defenders come, 3 steps in on the weak lane line as the reverse outlet, 4 flashes from half court to the middle, and the pass out of the trap goes back to 3 stepping in, because the inbounder's defender has become a trapper and nobody is on 3. The read: two defenders commit to the corner. Counter shown: the scouted diamond runs 'red denial', its weak-side wing leaving the middle to stop the inbounder's dribble; the ball goes to 4 in the middle the moment it opens, then ahead to the sideline runner for three on two. Rules: a fake toward one outlet moves the interceptor, then the real pass goes to the other; the ball moves faster than the rotation; attack to score. I learned the 1-2-2 attack from Coach's Clipboard's 1-2-1-1 press offense and The Film Room's sideline, middle, back breakdown; give them a look if you want the other entries against the diamond.
