About this play
Coach Eric Bennaka's (@CoachBennaka) Underneath 4, the read when the shooter is covered. The entry is the same as the first play: 1 takes the ball out on the left side of the basket from the 1-4 flat line, 5 lifts to the near elbow, 1 passes in, 4 lifts to the far elbow, 5 swings it, 1 steps onto the floor and sets the flex screen for 2. This time X2 goes under the screen and beats 2 to the block, so 4 holds the ball. The counter is the screen the screener: 5 drops from the near elbow and screens down on X1, and 1, who just set the flex screen, curls up off it to that elbow for the pass from 4 and the jumper. Why it works: the defender who just chased a flex screen is turned toward the cutter, not the screener, and a down screen on him frees the inbounder for a fifteen-footer on the catch. Personnel: 1 should be a shooter from the elbow, and 5 a screener who gets his body on X1. The read is 2 covered on the block; the frame after the cut shows it. Common mistakes: 5 screening before 2 has cleared, 1 drifting high early and bringing X1 with him, and 1 catching and dribbling instead of shooting on the catch. I picked this read up from Eric's doc too; his original write-up is linked on the first play in this set, and our Flex post on the site runs through the same screen-the-screener idea in the half court.
