About this play

Coach Eric Bennaka's (@CoachBennaka) Underneath 4, the first option. A baseline out of bounds set from a 1-4 flat line: 1 takes the ball out on the left side of the basket with 2 and 3 in the corners and 5 and 4 on the blocks. 5 lifts to the near elbow for the first pass, 4 lifts to the far elbow to receive the swing, and while the ball moves, 1 steps onto the floor and sets a flex screen on the baseline for 2, who cuts across the lane to the block for a layup from 4. Why it works: after the entry nobody guards the inbounder, so the flex screen comes from a man X2 is not watching, and the ball arrives at the weak elbow exactly as 2 clears the screen. Personnel: 2 is the cutter and finisher, 4 the passer at the elbow, 5 the first catch. The read is X2 trailing over the screen; when he goes under and beats 2 to the block, the counter is the second play in this set, the inbounder coming high off 5's down screen, and the third keeps the flex going if neither is there. Common mistakes: 4 lifting before 5 catches, 1 screening before he has stepped in, and 2 cutting high over the screen instead of baseline under it. I picked this one up from the doc Eric put together, handwritten page and all; his original write-up is in the links on this play, and if you want more on the pattern it borrows from, our Flex post on the site is the place.
