BLOB Box vs 2-3 Zone

About this play

The same box against a 2-3 zone, from Basketball For Coaches' box zone plays and Coach's Clipboard's Box-2 zone version. The box shifts a step toward the ball; 5 sprints up and screens the ball-side top guard, 4 runs off 5's back and screens the ball-side forward, and the shooter sprints off 4's back to the ball-side corner for the three while the point fills the top as the safety. Why screen the zone from the inside: a zone defender guards a space, and a screened zone defender cannot get to the one space he owns. The read is the forward: he must pick the corner or the gap, and whichever he picks opens the other. The counter is for the zone whose wing defenders fight over the screens early: 4 and 5 slip their screens to the rim instead of setting them, and the inbounder hits the slip while the forward is chasing the shooter. Common mistakes: screening air because the zone shifted before the box did, the shooter curling into the lane instead of the corner, and both screeners slipping when only one is open. I picked this up from Basketball For Coaches' box zone plays and Coach's Clipboard's Box-2 zone variation; Coach Calls Timeout's baseline-versus-zone video will take you deeper too.
