About this play
The baseline play for three tenths to seven tenths of a second, when the rule itself decides the shot: with 0.3 or less a player cannot catch and shoot, so only a tap can score; with 0.4 to 0.7 a quick catch and shoot at the rim is allowed. From the box, Coach's Clipboard's Play D and the Coaching Toolbox's Line 2451 tip play: the shooter cuts to the ball-side corner, the weak post cuts to the weak block and the point pops to the wing to clear the lane, the ball-side post flashes to the front of the rim, and the inbounder throws a high lob to the rim for the tap or the catch. Why clear the lane first: a lob needs nobody between the thrower and the rim, and three cuts away from the lane take three defenders with them. The read is the clock first and then the post's defender. The counter, from Line 2451, is for the defender who fronts the post at the rim: the post goes up anyway and taps the ball back to the inbounder stepping in from the baseline for the layup. Common mistakes: the lob thrown too low to tap, the post jumping before the ball is above the rim, and the inbounder stepping in before the ball is in the air. Play D is from Coach's Clipboard's last-second situations and Line 2451 from the Coaching Toolbox, and the clock rules come from HoopTactics' end-of-game notes; read them before you need them.
