About this play
Spain pick and roll, the stack ball screen: the post screens for the point at the top, and as the post rolls, a shooter stacked behind him back-screens the roller's defender and then pops to the top for the three. Why it breaks drop coverage in particular: the dropping big is the one defender who is supposed to meet the roller, and the back screen takes him out, so the lob to the roller and the pop to the shooter happen at once. The reads: a dropped big who is hit by the back screen means lob the roller, a shooter's defender who helps on the roller means hit the pop, a trailing on-ball defender means the elbow pull-up. The counter is for the defense that switches the back screen, sending the shooter's defender onto the roller and keeping the big on the pop: the back screener leaks out to the wing instead of screening, Half Court Hoops' version, so the roller is guarded by a small and the lob goes over him, or the leak is open. Common mistakes: the back screen set before the roll starts, the shooter popping to the wing instead of the top, and the point passing to the pop before he has read the roller. Spain I learned from BBALLBREAKDOWN's history of the stack pick and roll, Hoop Student, and Coach's Clipboard, and the leak counter is Half Court Hoops'; I wrote the whole thing up in the Spain post on the site if you want the animated version.
