About this play

Delay, the five-out offense with the big at the top as the hub, and its simplest trigger: the get, where a guard passes to the big and immediately chases the pass for a handoff. The big dribbles at the chaser and hands off, then rolls or re-screens; the guard attacks if his defender trails. Why the get gives a guard who cannot run a ball screen the same advantage: the handoff does the screen's job and the chase supplies the momentum a ball screen would, so the guard comes off it with his defender behind him and nobody ever set a pick. The reads: trail means attack, under means shoot or trigger the flip, a big who shows means the pocket pass on the roll. The flip is the second read: when the defender goes under the handoff, the big turns after handing off and re-screens for the guard the opposite way, Hooper University's twist, forcing the defender over the top. The counter is for the defense that top-locks the chase to deny the get: the guard back-cuts to the rim for the pass from the big, the standard Delay backdoor, and the continuity swings to the other slot. Common mistakes: the guard chasing without faking first so the handoff is read, the big handing off standing still, and the corners lifting so the backdoor has help. Everything here is from Slappin' Glass, their 5-out Delay teach tape and Ryan Pannone's Delay primer, and the flip is Hooper University's twist; read them if you want the whole offense, not just the get.
