Lindsay Gottlieb's "West" from Coach's Clipboard, a quick hitter against the 2-3 that gives the best shooter an open three or the post a layup, and reads the same defender for both. The ball goes to the wing and back to shift the zone, the point dribbles left, the shooter cuts underneath along the baseline to the left corner, the two posts screen the middle and the far forward, and 4 cuts under both screens to the ball-side block. The read is X3, the left forward, and 1 makes it with one look: X3 runs out at the shooter, 4 is alone on the block for the layup; X3 stays put inside, the shooter is alone in the corner for the three. Why one read: the forward is the only defender who can take either player, and he can take only one. The counter is for the zone that stays home with the forward and drops the top guard to the corner instead: the shooter keeps going through to the wing above the forward, the post who screened the middle seals him, and the ball goes to whichever of the two the dropping guard did not reach. Common mistakes: running it before the zone has shifted, the shooter stopping in the corner instead of arriving on the catch, and the screens set a count early so the forward slides around them. West is Lindsay Gottlieb's play; I learned it from Coach's Clipboard's write-up and her Championship Productions clinic on attacking zones, which will take you deeper for her other quick hitters.
