About this play

Coach's Clipboard's "Box-2" sideline out-of-bounds play against the 2-3, with the counter for a team that has seen it on film. The box: 2 and 1 on the ball-side elbow and block, 4 and 5 opposite; 2 is the shooter, 4 the screener, 5 the rebounder. On the slap, 2 screens down for 1, and 1 sprints up toward the ball so the play-side top guard has to go with him and the wing empties out; 4 steps across and screens the play-side forward; and 2 comes off 4's screen underneath to the wing for the inbound and the shot, with 4 posting the forward and 5 flashing high for the lob as the other options. Why screen the forward on a sideline play: the forward is the defender who owns the wing when the ball is on the side, and a screened forward leaves the wing to nobody. The read is the play-side guard following 1 up. The counter is for the team that has seen the first option on film: 1 still sprints up to the free-throw line, but once 2 goes by underneath, 1 turns and trails him along the baseline while 2 keeps running up the sideline and takes the forward with him; 1 catches in the corner behind the forward who chased 2. Common mistakes: 1 drifting instead of sprinting up, 2 curling before the screen on the forward is set, and the inbounder throwing the first option into a defense that is sitting on it. Box-2 and its counter come from Coach's Clipboard's sideline plays, and Basketball Immersion's sideline-versus-zone video will take you deeper for the spacing.
