About this play

Coach's Clipboard's "23 Stack" baseline out-of-bounds play against the 2-3, with its counter "Splitter". The stack sits on the ball-side lane line: the shooter 2 lowest, then 4 and 5, with 1 at the top as the safety. On the slap, 2 cuts to the ball-side corner and takes the forward with him, 5 steps in and screens the middle, and 4 drops to the ball-side block, which now has no one guarding it. The read is X4, the forward, and the inbounder makes it with his eyes: forward chases 2 to the corner, 4 gets the ball on the block; forward sits inside, 2 gets it in the corner. Why stack on the lane line: three players on one side of the zone give the forward and the middle three things to watch and the inbounder one pass to make. The counter is for the zone that keeps the forward home and drops the top guard to take the corner: 5 steps down and gets his body between the forward and the middle, pinning the inside man, 2 still curls off 4 to the corner, and once the forward drifts toward 2, 4 drops down the lane behind him and catches for the short jumper. One forward is left guarding 2 and 4 at once, and he cannot. Common mistakes: the stack standing still before the slap, the inbounder choosing before the forward does, and nobody staying home as the safety. 23 Stack and Splitter are straight from Coach's Clipboard's zone baseline plays, and Coach Calls Timeout has a good video on the same idea; give them a look.
