About this play
2-3 Zone Buster attacks the 2-3 zone with one ball screen on a top guard and two pin screens in the back line, so the paint is empty when the baseline cutter arrives. It is a quick hitter for a team that keeps seeing 2-3 and wants a layup instead of a kick-out three. Start in a 1-2-2 look: 1 at the top with the ball, 2 on the left wing, 4 and 5 low on the left side, and 3 in the right corner. The 3 is the scorer, so put a finisher there. 2 steps up and ball screens the left top guard. 1 drives off it to the left wing and keeps going toward the corner. The bottom-left defender has to come up and take the ball, and that is the whole point of the drive: once he leaves, nobody is home on the baseline. While 1 drives, 5 pins the back-right defender out toward the corner and 4 pins the middle defender up the lane. Those two screens empty the paint. 3 cuts along the baseline from the right corner into the lane, 1 hits him, and the shot is a layup. The timing to drill is 3's cut. If he leaves the corner before the bottom-left defender commits to 1, that defender just drops back and meets him in the lane. He goes when the defender goes.
