About this play

Pistol Keep, the counter to Chase. The push is the same: 1 up the right sideline, 2 ahead on the wing, 5 trailing to the top. When the defense starts jumping the handoff, the wing fakes it and keeps the ball, 1 runs past to the corner, and the big steps down into a wing ball screen. Run it the trip after Chase has been read once, because a defender who commits to a handoff that never happens is out of the play. Why it works: the fake handoff moves X1 up the floor and out of the help, the empty corner means the ball screen has nobody to help on it from the baseline side, and the big is screening while his own defender is still trailing the play. Personnel: 2 a wing who can fake a handoff and turn the corner, 5 a big who rolls, 1 a guard who will sprint to the corner knowing the ball may not come. The reads are the ball screen reads: X5 drops, pull up at the elbow; X5 hedges hard, 5 rim-runs behind him for the lob; X1 helps off the corner to stop the roll, 1 is open for the corner three. The counter to the counter is Chase itself: run both and the defense cannot guess which is coming. Common mistakes: 2 fakes the handoff with the ball instead of with his body, so it is a travel or a turnover; 1 stopping on the wing instead of clearing to the corner; and 5 screening the baseline side so the drive goes where the help is. The wing entry and the slips came from Coach's Clipboard's Pistol plays page, and Hooper University's Pistol video shows Keep next to Chase so you can see the difference; read the page, then watch the clip.
