About this play
The sideline play for the last two seconds, when the time decides the target: Coach's Clipboard's "Pistons" from Dwane Casey and Joao Costa's one-second sideline play. From the box, the shooter cuts under two screens to the ball-side corner for the catch-and-shoot when there are one to two seconds, the point cuts off the same screens to the top as the second catch-and-shoot, and the post curls around the elbow screen to the rim for the lob when there is half a second or less. Why the time decides: with two seconds a catch and shoot is possible, with half a second only a lob can score, and the play gives the inbounder both from one picture. The read is the clock first and the defenders second. The counter, Costa's one-second play, is for the defense that jumps to the shooters on the slap: the point back-screens the post's defender and the post cuts to the rim for the lob behind a defense that is looking at the corner and the top. Common mistakes: the shooter catching and taking a dribble with one second, the lob thrown to a post who is not yet in the air, and the inbounder choosing before the clock tells him to. Pistons is Dwane Casey's and the one-second play is Joao Costa's, both from Coach's Clipboard's buzzer beaters, and Coach Calls Timeout's last-second sideline video will take you deeper.
