About this play
The third Point route: the passer cuts under the post looking for a handoff, and when there is none he continues to the rim for the return pass, then clears through to the corner. Why the under cut comes before the screen: it is a basket cut off a pass, the first rule of the offense, and the defense has to honor it before anything is set. The corner player lifts to the wing and, after faking toward the ball, sets a pin-down (the turn-out) for the cutter, who turns out to the vacant wing for the pass and the three; the screener then posts (Hoop Student, DeForest, Basketball For Coaches). Counter shown: the scouted defense switches the pin-down, so the screener slips it into the lane for the pass from the post, because a switch always leaves the smaller defender behind the screener. Air Force's version keeps the screener as the post for the rest of the possession and sends the center out to fake-screen the wing, who back cuts. I learned Under from Coach Lee DeForest's Point set, Hoop Student's Point series, and Basketball For Coaches; look them up if you want the Air Force wrinkle in full.
