Princeton: Point Over (Pin-Down and Handoff)

About this play

The second Point route: the passer cuts over the top of the post and sets a wide pin-down for the strong-side corner, who comes off it and takes a dribble handoff from the post, turning the corner downhill as the post rolls (Hooper University's version; Thomaidis runs Over as a flex action with the post down screening the passer, and DeForest as a fake screen into a side ball screen). Why the pin-down and the handoff together: the corner's defender has to fight a screen and then a handoff in the same three steps, and a defender who overplays the pin-down to beat the handoff gives up the back cut to the post, which is the other read. Counter shown: the scouted weak-side wing defender sinks into the lane to stop the handoff drive and the far corner's man helps too, so the handler kicks to the wing and the wing makes one more pass to the corner shooter the second helper left. The screener shakes back to the top after the pin-down, because the second cut to the perimeter is the Point rule in every route. The version drawn here is Hooper University's; Lisa Thomaidis's playbook and Coach Lee DeForest show the other two ways to run Over, and give them a look before you pick one.
