About this play
Carril's own high-post offense from the 2-3 high set, the version he ran without a dominant post: guards in the slots, forwards at the free-throw line extended, and the center high at the nail (Coach's Clipboard's Carril page). The entry is the turn-out: the guard passes to the wing, both guards cut inside to just below the blocks, the center steps out to the top and takes the pass from the wing, and both forwards down screen for the guards, who criss-cross under the rim and turn out to the wings beside the center. Why it works: the center at the top with two shooters coming off down screens is a passing picture the defense has to guard with its forwards, and a forward who overplays the turn-out gives up the back cut. Counter shown: the scouted defender jumps over the top of the down screen to take the turn-out away, so the guard plants and back cuts for the bounce pass from the center. Carril's continuation when the turn-out is caught: the pass goes to the shooter, the other guard cuts back low, and the wing and center set a staggered double down screen for him. Both wing passes denied: the guard waves the other guard through to the block, the center steps out, and the first guard cuts to the far block for the same screens. Everything here is from Pete Carril's clinic notes as Coach's Clipboard published them, which cover the whole 2-3 high offense; read them if you want the rest of his counters.
