About this play

The flare on the weak side after a pass. Why: when the ball goes to one wing the far side of the floor is where the help lives, so a flare screen set on the blind side of the passer's defender turns that help into a shooter running away from the ball for a skip pass. The screener's rule is to turn to the ball and slip the moment his man leaves him. Counter shown: the scouted defense switches the flare, the screener's defender jumping out to the shooter, so the screener slips to the rim and the passer dribbles middle for the angle and throws over the top, because a switched flare leaves the low defender following the screener up and the rim lane open. Rule: the flare is set on the defender's blind side and the shooter runs off it to the spot he can shoot from, not to the ball. The flare is one of the screens I wrote up in the thirty-seven screens post on the site, and Hooper University's flare screen sets are the best film on it I know; will take you deeper if you want more.
